Campaign Story
AFCA aims to set up 3 greenhouses for orphaned girls who were abused by their guardians. Girls will gain incredible skills for their future. That includes setting up the greenhouse, setting up an irrigation system, mulching, growing seedlings, planting, fertilizing, harvesting, marketing, and selling produce. They also learn traditional field farming. With a little under half the proceeds going into their personal bank accounts, the girls have funds for the day they leave the orphanage. They leave with skills, a savings account and hope.
Statistics show that in Zimbabwe, thousands of children will spend the night in fear of abuse, sexual molestation by family members or relatives, while others will be selling their bodies in forced prostitution. One in every three girls in Zimbabwe will be sexually abused before they reach the age of 18.
AFCA provides the tools for adolescent girls to learn farming inside and outside of a greenhouse environment. The girls will learn valuable farming skills, as well as greenhouse set up and management, marketing, packaging, sales, budgeting, and savings. Throughout their years in training, the girls also receive regular schooling and counseling. The girls will have skills that will last them their entire lives by the time they leave the orphanage in which they currently live.
