Campaign Story
Beitbridge Reception Centre was established in 2012 as a government initiative with support from Save the Children as well as IOM mainly to cater for the needs of unaccompanied migrant children. It is mainly a transit center serving the border town. Due to the high smuggling cases experienced in the border town it was a noble idea to have, a safe haven for the protection of minors awaiting repatriation and reintegration.
Interim care as well as psychosocial support is rendered to children. A court order valid for 7 days is issued and an extension up to 14 days can be granted if need be. Initially, the establishment had a carrying capacity of 40 children. However, one of the dormitories was gutted by fire in 2022, thus minimal carrying capacity amid the influx of minors particularly during school holidays.
